Men's Cross Country - Wed, Nov. 14, 2012

For the 22nd time in his illustrious coaching career, Dr. Mike Johnson has been recognized as the KIAC Men's XC Coach of the Year.

In his 32nd year of coaching at Berea College, this honor marks the 44th time Coach Johnson has received such a distinction as he has won the same award on the women's side 22 additional times.  Mike Johnson has coached track, cross country and occasionally swimming for the past 31 years at Berea College.  During that time, Coach Johnson has coached 31 All-Americans and Academic All-Americans, one National Champion and many top finishers in the National Championships.

His influence is felt throughout the region, as many of his former student-athletes are now coaching their own teams.  "He is invaluable, both to our program and to the student-athletes he coaches," says Berea Athletic Director Mark Cartmill.  "He is a tremendous mentor to our other coaches and a wonderful ambassador for Berea College Athletics."

As for the most recent honor, Johnson believes this is a good omen for the team as they compete in this year's National Championship.  The squad will depart on Wednesday, November 14 at noon for the NAIA National Championship, which will be held Saturday in Vancouver, Washington.
