The Berea College baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat Transylvania University 4-3 Monday night at the Sports Complex.
The Mountaineers led 2-1 in the top of the 9th inning before Transy senior outfielder John Michael Cowley homered with one out to tie the game at 2-2. After a scoreless 10th, Transy took a 3-2 lead on a double from Graham Winchester. Berea freshman Logan Hunt (Richmond, KY) singled to open the home half of the final frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Ty Shipley (Jonesborough, TN). Sophomore Alex Helm (Calvert City, KY) tied the game with a single to left, scoring Hunt. Junior Austin Hunt (Richmond, KY) capped the win with a double to deep right-center, plating Helm and giving Berea the come-from-behind win. It was the first extra base hit of the night for Berea, who pushed their overall record to 5-7.
Austin Hunt finished the night 3-6 for the Mountaineers, who also got a 4-5 offensive effort from junior Mikey Scott (Clarkson, KY). Sophomore Lawton Jackson (Allensville, KY) earned the win in relief, despite allowing the go-ahead run to score in the top of the inning. Senior Kyle Tibbs (Smiths Grove, KY) started the game for Berea and lasted 6 1/3 innings, allowing only five hits and one run. He struck out eight. Overall Berea pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts and only one walk on the night.
