Athletic Training

The Berea College Athletic Department provides a certified athletic trainer for every home event and most Mountaineer practice sessions.  Head Athletic Trainer Sandy Williams, MS, LAT, ATC, is in her 24th year at Berea College; while Mariah Stuart, MS, LAT, ATC, is in her first year.  They oversee a staff of students whom include Berea College labor students interested in an allied health care field as well as clinical students from Eastern Kentucky University’s athletic training curriculum program.  As a staff they provide sports medicine services to the 14 intercollegiate teams whom compete at the NCAA Division III level.

Sandy, Mariah and their staff work closely with Colleen Ambrose, APRN from Berea College Health Service/White House Clinic, as well as Dr. David Dome, who is the Mountaineers team physician.  Dr. Dome, a board certified orthopedic surgeon, is affiliated with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine.

The athletic training room is located on the ground floor of the Seabury Center athletic complex and opens at 2:00 PM each weekday afternoon and as necessary on the weekends.  Athletic trainers are usually at the competition site 2 hours before the game and remain 30 minutes after the conclusion of each contest.

Teams visiting Berea College can expect to receive the following athletic training services:

  • Certified athletic trainer on site
  • Taping (supplies provided by your team) and stretching available prior to the start of the game
  • Injury ice
  • Emergency equipment (AED, crutches, splint bag)
  • A 10-gallon cooler of water will be provided

Emergency response systems will be in place including access to EMS personnel and/or hospitals

If your team will be traveling without a certified athletic trainer, we request 48 hours notice of any needs your team may require so that we can adequately prepare for your teams' arrival.  Also we request you send the necessary supplies (including tape) your team will need.
