The University of Pikeville defeated the Berea College baseball team 9-6 Wednesday night at the Sports Complex.
Berea fell behind early as Pikeville mounted an 8-1 lead through the first five and a half innings of play. The resilient squad battled back, plating three runs in the home half of the 6th inning and two more in the 7th to pull within three runs. Pikeville's Michael Vaquera quieted the Berea bats through the final two frames to earn the save and secure the win for the visiting Bears. Ryan Akins (JR/Lexington, KY) keyed the Mountaineer rally, going 3-4 at the plate with three RBI, two runs scored and a homerun. Mikey Scott (SR/Clarkson, KY) was 3-5 with two runs scored.
Brandon Gonzalez (JR/Fairdale, KY), the first of seven Mountaineers on the mound throughout the evening, suffered the loss. The junior lefty allowed six hits and five earned runs in three innings.
Berea (15-13) will be back in action this weekend as they host KIAC frontrunner Brescia University in a four-game set. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:00 PM.
