Mountaineers Drop Two to Cougars

The Mountaineers started off their doubleheader with a bang, as Alex Helm (2-3, HR) tanked a home run over the left field fence to lead off the second inning. The UCC Cougars wouldn't go down without an answer, however, as they put runners on the corners with 2 outs after the first of Berea's five errors of the first game, giving Nick Burrus the chance to double down the left field line to tie the game at one.

Clermont tacked on one more after two errors by the middle infield gave UC's Mummert (3-3, RBI) reason to drive in Burrus with a single to left. BC couldn't find the run support in the final three innings to spark a comeback, amounting only 2 baserunners in that span.

Lawton Jackson pitched another masterful performance for the Berea College Mountaineers, going the full six innings without giving up an earned run. He, unfortunately, is docked with his first statistical loss of the season.

Berea's second game's scoring efforts started off in a similar fashion, as Alex Helm knocked a two out single, followed by a single by both Devin Belleville and Ryan Blevins. A wild throw on the Blevins single allowed Helm to cross the plate and put the Mountaineers up 1-0 in the top of the 4th. UC Clermont came right back in the bottom half of the inning on an odd sacrifice fly to Berea College first basemen Evan Hackney.

Jake Taylor (2-4, R) gave the Mountaineers another jump in the top of the fifth, knocking a double to the right center field wall. Logan Hunt (2-4, 2 RBI) would single into left field to score Taylor and put BC up 2-1. But, to keep form with the rest of the afternoon, the Cougars tallied another run after two more BC infield errors and a single by Ryan Mummert.

In the top of the 7th, when Berea needed it most, Logan Hunt was able to score Aaron Effoe on another single into centerfield, putting BC up 3-2 going into the final home frame. The Cougars scored on a passed ball to tie it up, and send the game into extra innings. Berea failed to score in the top of the eighth, and Clermont scored on a walk-off single by Cincinnati's Roberts to down Berea for the second time of the afternoon.

Lance Shelton (7.1 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 6 H) pitched the entire game for Berea, but unfortunately went the distance and will be given the loss for the second game. Berea College baseball is back in action on Tuesday, March 31st, as they take on the Kentucky State Thoroughbreds at the Berea College Sports Complex. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 2:00pm.
