BEREA, KY- Berea College baseball started their second game of their three game series against the Tennessee Temple Crusaders at the Berea College Sports Complex on Saturday at 1:00pm, where they won 4-3, but lost in their 3:50pm game by a score of 9-6.
The first game started off in typical Berea fashion, giving up two runs on two hits and two errors, but Lawton Jackson was able to stop the bleeding, and hold the line from there. Berea scratched one run in the bottom of the fourth, when Jake Taylor scored on a wild pitch by Crusader pitcher Chase White.
Berea College would score again in the bottom of the fifth, as Jake Taylor scored Chris Works to tie the ball game. Logan Hunt scored in the following inning on a Chase O'Connor single, putting Berea up one going into the top of the 7th.
Lawton Jackson was unable to hold the line in the final frame, giving up one run and letting Tennessee Temple tie the game up, but the Mountaineers wouldn't be denied in the bottom of the 7th of their senior day, as Senior Ryan Akins reached on a rare bunt hint, and scored on a double by Evan Hackney to win the first game by a score of 4-3.
The second game showed Patrick Elzinga on the mound against Tennessee Temple's Kenny Akin. Temple got off to a good start, as they were able to notch a run in the first inning after loading the bases, and a 2-out, Caden Shadrick walk to bring in the first run of the game. The Crusaders would tack on one more in the top of the 2nd inning, as a Ryan Bruce single brought in Micah Wyatt.
Berea was able to get on the board in the bottom of the 2nd, when Alex Helm grounded into a double play with runners on the corners and no outs to plate his outfield counterpart in Logan Hunt.
Temple plated another two runs in the top of the 5th, as Caleb Lee scored McElrath on a double to deep left center field, and Clay O'Shields singled to score Lee.
The game became much more interesting in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Alex Helm reached on a throwing error by the TTU shortstop, followed up by a Devin Belleville walk, and a Chris Works single. Work's single plated Helm, and an Aaron Effoe double into centerfield scored both Belleville and Works. After a bunt single by Jake Taylor, Ryan Akins grounded into a double play to score Effoe.
Logan Hunt doubled to start off the bottom of the sixth, was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chase O'Conner, and was brought in on a single by Ryan Belleville.
The Crusaders rallied in the top of the 7th inning off Chad Brown, and then off Chase O'Connor, loading the bases, and singling and walking a run in. With the bases still loaded and only one out, Tony Hill walked and scored the go-ahead run for TTU. Cord Glass pitched the rest of the inning for Berea, allowing two more runs in, credited to O'Conner. Berea couldn't rally past their late three run deficit in the 7th, losing the second game, and the series by a score of 9-6.
Berea baseball will be back in action on Monday, April 13th to take on former KIAC rival Asbury University. First pitch of the first game of the doubleheader is set for 4:00pm.
