Baseball Wins Road Doubleheader Against Ohio Christian University; Drops Game Against Centre College

The Mountaineers played three games in a three day span, going 2-1 in those games. The team recorded the two wins against Ohio Christian University in a weekend doubleheader but fell to the Colonels of Centre College this past Tuesday 7-4.

In the first game against the Blazers of Ohio Christian University, the Mountaineers offense went crazy. It took a few innings for the offense to start clicking but after scoring three runs in three innings, Berea scored 16 runs over the next four to win the first game of the doubleheader against the Blazers 19-0. Seven Mountaineers hit doubles in the game, combining for 18 hits and bringing 15 RBIs with those hits. Ryan Akins and Chris Works tied for the game high in RBIs with three.

Lawton Jackson pitched the entire seven innings for the Blue Crew. Jackson gave up five hits, but did not allow a run, a walk and struck out five batters.

The second game was a closer contest until the last inning as the Mountaineers went into the seventh inning of this contest leading 3-1. In the seventh inning, Berea used three hits to put four runs on the board, three of those runs coming from an Evan Hackney triple.

Patrick Elzinga went the distance for the Mountaineers. Elzinga allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned) but struck out 11 batters in the game.

The third game of their road trip and in three days took place in Danville, KY as the Mountaineers visited Centre College for a single game. The Colonels scored the first run of the game but Berea scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, a bases loaded walk from Aaron Effoe and off a fielder's choice to take a 2-1 lead. The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the eighth, when Centre College scored six runs to take the lead 7-2 heading to the top of the ninth inning. With one out in the top of the ninth, Akins stepped up to the plate and hit a double that scored Works and Devin Belleville but the offense could not put more runs on the board to extend the game and the game finished with a score of 7-4 in favor of the Colonels.

Akins led the Mountaineers hitting against Centre College as he went 2-5, with a double and two RBIs. The offense combined for seven hits. Lance Shelton started for Berea and pitched six innings, allowing five hits, one run, walking four batters and striking out four batters.

The team will return to action Friday, April 24th as they host Brescia University at the Berea College Sports Complex. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
