BEREA, KY- The Berea Mountaineers baseball team defeated the Summit University Defenders at the Berea College Sports Complex on Thursday, piling 21 hits on to win 22-0.
The Mountaineer offense was giving the spark that it has badly needed over the past few weeks, as Ryan Blevens (4-6, 3B, 3 R, 3 RBI), Logan Hunt (3-4, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI), and Devin Belleville (3-3, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) provided great individual performances at the plate and in the field to give the Mountaineers the firepower needed to blow away the Defenders.
Michael Smither (7.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K) threw the first complete game shutout of his career, only giving up one hit to the Summit offense. Smither took a no hitter into the 6th inning of work, but gave up a soft hit between the second baseman Blevens and the right fielder in Hunt. Smither dealt out seven solid innings, letting his defense do much of the work for him, as he only had to strike two batters out to finish the complete game.
The Mountaineers leave on Friday, March 11, for their away matchup against the Sewanee Tigers from Tennessee. BC will play two seven inning games on Saturday, and one nine inning game on Sunday (weather permitting). Chad Brown and Matt Wilburn are the projected starters for Saturday.
