Indianapolis, IN - The Berea College Men's track and field team traveled to the University of Indianapolis to take part in the UIndy Track and Field Challenge. This meet marked the season opener for the Mountaineer Squad. A few saw action on January 16th at the Kentucky Invitational but this would be the first time the entire Mountaineer squad hit the indoor track after being snowed in last week and having to cancel a meet.
The UIndy Challenge started on Friday, January 29th. The men's team saw several top 10 finishes on the first day of action. Starting off was Thomas Welch with a 9th place finish in the high jump. Shortly after Dave Bell qualified for the finals of the long jump and finished 9th overall in the finals with a jump of 6.18 meters. Dylan Watkins finished 6th in 5k and set a new indoor personal record with a time 16:35. Several other members of the Mountaineer track team would set new personal records before calling it a night and getting some rest before taking part in day two of the competition.
Many more members of the Berea College team would see action on day two of the meet. Isaiah Dodson brought the crowd to their feet after a great finish in his first ever mile on the track. Dodson found himself in the middle of the pack for most the race before unleashing a huge kick that would boost him to the front with less than 100m to go but a tie up with the lead runner would throw him off stride and he would finish second by only 0.14 of a second with a time of 4:25.55. About a hour and a half later Dodson would finish 6th in the 800m run with a time of 2:01.91.
USCAA Cross Country National Champion Emmanuell Kemei also found himself with a 2nd place finish. Kemei won his heat in a new school record time of 1:22.58 but finished 2nd overall after a runner in another heat beat his time.
The Mountaineers ended the day with a exciting 5th place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:33.48. Freshman Issac Domenech started the team off after a 11th place finish in the open 400m earlier in the day. Other members of the relay team included Dodson, Kemei and Bell.
The Berea Track and Field teams will head to Anderson University on February 6th. The meet is set to start at 3:00 PM.
