Berea, KY- Today saw the home opener of the NCAA era for the women's soccer team at the Berea College Sports Complex. The team took on the Lions of Mount St. Joseph University.
Each team tried to create offensive opportunities for themselves as proven by the offside calls against the offenses in the early portion of the game. Mount St. Joseph was able to capitalize on their offensive chances first though, as they scored a goal at the 17:51 minute mark. An equalizer for the Mountaineers in the 21st minute hit off the post and Berea saw their deficit increase as the Lions scored another goal with 15 minutes left in the first half. Mount St. Joseph went into the halftime intermission with a 2-0 advantage.
The second half saw the defense clamp down a bit for the Mountaineers, as they were able to force multiple offside calls in the opening segments of the final half. Berea's possession of the ball was not turning into any offensive shots which allowed the Lions to extend their lead to 3-0 in the 71st minute. The home Mountaineers would be unable to rally back and fell to Mount St. Joseph by a final margin of three goals. Amber Follin started the game in the net for the team, saving four of seven shots on goal.
Berea will get a couple days off from game competition before they travel to USA South foe Maryville College (Tenn.) for a game which will not go against either team's conference record. First kick is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Live video of the game can be seen here while you can see live stats at www.bereaathletics.com.
