Berea, KY- The women's soccer team took the field tonight at the Berea College Sports Complex to begin a three-game home stand. The team welcomed the Maryville College (Tenn.) Scots, a divisional opponent in the USA South, for a conference contest. The teams met earlier in the season for a non-conference match up at the home of the Scots.
A slow start for the Mountaineers' offense caused an early disadvantage for the Blue Crew as the Scots were able to take a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Berea was unable to get the equalizer to tie the game before Maryville took a 2-0 advantage less than 20 minutes into the game. An opening presented itself for Stacey Keruwa but unfortunately her shot to cut the lead in half was saved by the Scots' keeper. A Madilyn Hord shot two minutes before halftime did not go in the back of the net as the Mountaineers went into the intermission trailing 5-0.
A corner kick two minutes into the second half did not produce a scoring opportunity for Berea as the opposing keeper was able to make a play on the ball. Sohara Perez had a couple of chances to add a goal to the scoreboard for Berea, including a slight breakaway, but neither shot would go into the back of the net. Shots by Sierra Massucco and Rebecca Schmidt were unable to make a dent in the Scots' lead as the Mountaineers went on to fall by a final score of 10-0. Perez led the team in shots with two while Massucco, Schmidt, Keruwa and Hord finished with one shot each. Amber Follin played the entire game in the net and finished with eight saves on 18 shots on goal.
The second game of a three game home stand for Berea comes on Saturday as the team hosts divisional opponent Covenant College for a 2:00 PM kickoff at the Berea College Sports Complex. These two teams opened the 2017 season against each other in a game which did not count as a conference game.
