Mountaineers Finish 8th in Windy Conditions

DANVILLE, KY- The Berea College Mountaineers traveled to Centre College this weekend to compete in the invitational hosted by the Centre Colonels. The women competed very well against both the 35mph winds in addition to the 19 other teams and came out with an 8th place finish!

Senior Layne Callow finished the night off with two top placings in the 800m and 1500m. She ran 2:26.45 in the 800m to bring home a second place finish. In the 1500m, Callow ran 5:01.18, finishing 7th. She was followed by Gabriella Sabino who ran a time of 5:07.70 for a 10th place finish. Sabino also competed in the 800m along with Freshman Jenna Hughes. Hughes ran a time of 2:33.77, to finish 10th. Sabino followed Hughes with a time of 2:34.07, placing 13th. Continuing with the distance squad, Erin Gonterman fought the wind for an entire 5k, running a time of 19:27.27, bringing home a 5thplace finish.

Sprinters also had a tough fight against the brutal winds. Cassandra McFadden ran 13.84 in the 100m, finishing 22nd. Amber "Bri" Sims placed 17th in the 200m with a time of 28.87. Rebecca Dixon was shortly behind her with a time of 29.30, placing 25th. In the 400m, Dixon placed 12th with a time of 1:04.89. She was followed by Grace Callow who ran 1:05.79, placing 16th.

Sims also had a great day on the field. She brought home a 1st place finish in the Javelin, throwing 32.92. LeAnna Luney followed her with a throw of 27.54, placing 8th. Simone Brown had luck on the field, too. She brought home second in the high jump with a height of 1.57m.

Up next for the Mountaineers is the University of Cumberland's Invitational this Friday and Saturday, March 8-9th.   The meet has a start time of 2:00pm on Friday and 9am on Saturday.
