Institute, WV- On Tuesday, the Mountaineers took a break from conference competition and traveled to West Virginia, where Berea was defeated by the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets, 3-0.
In the first set, West Virginia State got off to a quick start scoring six points to Berea's one point. While the set included an impressive four kills by Carolina Robles, the Mountaineers were not able to match West Virginia State's team total 19 kills and lost the set 25-13.
During the second set, the Yellow Jackets capitalized on the momentum they built in the first and quickly got off to a 11-2 lead over Berea. The Mountaineers were only able to manage three kills during the set, two by Kristin Barnes and one by Katherine Gonterman, allowing the Yellow Jackets to cruise to a 25-7 win.
The third set was the closest by far, with West Virginia State winning by only two points. The Yellow Jackets started the match with three quick points. However, the Mountaineers capitalized on numerous errors by West Virginia State and put together multiple kills to keep the score close. In the middle of the set, Berea had a five point scoring streak with five straight errors by the opponent. The streak allowed Berea to take their first leg of the game 20-19. Despite the close score, West Virginia State kept up the trend of putting together multiple kills and won the final set 25-23 to take the 3-0 shutout win.
The Mountaineers compete again Saturday as they travel to Brevard, NC where the Mountaineers will face both Brevard and Huntingdon. Berea's first match will begin at 2:00pm and second match will follow.
